Dr. M. Tyrrell Burrus, MD is one of Central Texas’s most decorated orthopedic surgeons: a board-certified, fellowship-trained specialist in sports medicine and shoulder surgery serving patients from locations in South Austin and Round Rock. He practices at Ascension Medical Group Seton Orthopedics and serves as a Clinical Instructor at Dell Medical School at UT Austin.

Very few orthopedic practices in the region match the combination of academic distinction, research output, and surgical expertise that Dr. Burrus brings to patient care every day. Tyrrell Burrus grew up in Beaumont, TX and earned a full four-year scholarship to Washington and Lee University, where he graduated magna cum laude in Biology, was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa, and earned the Biology Departmental Award, given to one biology major student per year. He was also a member of the varsity soccer team and was named to the NCAA Academic All-Conference team. He earned his Eagle Scout in 2000.

He earned his MD from the University of Texas Medical School at Houston, where he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society and scored a 265 on the USMLE Step 1, placing him among the top scorers nationally. At the University of Virginia, he served as Administrative Chief of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, earned the highest OITE score in both his PGY-3 and PGY-5 years, achieved a 100th percentile OITE score in his final year, and passed his board certification examination in the 95th percentile. By the time he left residency, his academic record was one of the most distinguished in his program’s history.

Dr. Burrus completed his Sports Medicine and Shoulder Surgery Fellowship at the University of Michigan Health System, one of the most competitive fellowship programs in the country, under Fellowship Director Bruce S. Miller, MD. During that year he served as Assistant Team Physician for both the University of Michigan and Eastern Michigan University, and as a physician for the U18 USA Hockey National Team Development Program.

He joined Orthopedic Associates of Central Texas in 2017 which later merged with Ascension Medical Group Seton Orthopedics. He serves as Medical Director at Northwest Hills Surgical Hospital and has sat on multiple other facility committees.,
